Founded in 1966, Carnegie Mellon's Department of Statistics evolved separately from the traditional umbrella of Mathematical Sciences in a University environment that emphasized computation, the understanding of human behavior and decision-making, and cross-disciplinaryresearch. This led the Department to define a path for itself by focusing on:

 

  • computational statistics,
  • Bayesian statistics, and
  • cross-disciplinary statistical research

    •  

    at a time when none of these was recognized as centrally important for a growing department.Today, all are substantial growth areas, and as a result our graduates are in demand for jobs in academia, government, and industry.
