The purpose of this workshop is ring together the academic and federal data confidentiality research community—both statisticians and computer scientists—and federal agency “owners” of data confidentiality problems in order to:

Identify important unsolved research problems associated with data confidentiality;
Articulate a research agenda that addresses those problems in a way that responds to current and emerging needs among federal statistical agencies;
Discuss and catalyze the kinds of collaborations among statisticians, computer scientists, domain scientists and data-owning agencies that are need to pursue the research agenda.

The workshop will lead to a set of papers addressing these three items, to be disseminated by multiple mechanisms, including the NCHS and NISS web sites, and either a standalone volume or a special issue of a journal. There will also be a white paper summarizing the others, and also possibly noting important issues not treated in the thematic sessions.

The workshop will be held at NCHS headquarters in Hyattsville, MD on Thursday and Friday, May 1-2, 2008. There is no registration fee.

The program will feature five thematic sessions:

Tabular Data: Presentations by Lawrence Cox, NCHS, and Aleksandra Slavkovic, Penn State University
Synthetic Data: Presentations by John Abowd, Cornell University, and Jerome Reiter, Duke University
Query Systems: Presentations by Cynthia Dwork, Microsoft Research, and Adam Smith, Penn State University
SDL for Weighted Data: Presentations by Avinash Singh, Statistics Canada, and Stephen Fienberg, Carnegie Mellon University
Distributed Data: Presentations by Alan Karr, NISS, and Xiaodong Lin, University of Cincinnati

There will also be a closing panel discussion on federal agency needs.
