NISS Affiliates Program

NISS/SAMSI University Affiliates Program

Update: December, 2003

1. SAMSI DMML MID-YEAR WORKSHOPS. The SAMSI program on Data Mining and Machine Learning (DMML) will hold three one-day Mid-Year workshops associated with (in one case, merging two of) the Working Groups:

The purposes are to take stock of progress and problems so far, and to set the high-level research agenda for the spring semester. Participants will include DMML visitors, postdocs, students and local faculty participants, as well as 2-3 outside speakers at each workshop. The Mid-Year workshops will be held at SAMSI; we expect the atmosphere to be informal but intense.

Limited space is available at each of these workshops for affiliates. If you or someone from your organization is interested in attending, please contact the appropriate Working Group leader:

Affiliates reimbursement accounts (ARAs) may be used to attend these workshops.

2. DMML WORKSHOP FOR UNDERGRADUATES. This item is intended mainly for University Affiliates. On Friday and Saturday, February 13-14, 2004, SAMSI will hold the second undergraduate workshop on "Data Mining: Handling the Flood of Data." The first workshop, in November, was over-subscribed, which has led to this second edition. Those who attended in November felt that they received a strong introduction to DMML that took them all the way to the research frontiers. All attendees receive full support for their expenses from SAMSI.

Please encourage your undergraduate students who are interested in data mining or machine learning to consider attending this workshop. Information and an on-line registration form are available at

3. FUTURE AFFILIATES EVENTS

4. AFFILIATES PROBLEM DAY. As noted in Item 3, the inaugural Affiliates Problem Day will be held on Thursday, March 4, 2004, the day preceding the March 5 Affiliates Planning Meeting. In the near future you will receive an invitation to be a "problem presenter" at this exciting new event.

5. CO-SPONSORED EVENTS. Affiliates reimbursement accounts (ARAs) may be used to attend events co-sponsored by NISS, including:

6. POSTDOCTORAL APPOINTMENTS. NISS has project needs and funds to make at least two postdoctoral appointments between now and next summer.
