2. SHORT COURSE. Regrettably, the planned Short Course on Validation of Mathematical Models and Computer Simulations for Product Development, which was to have been held at Oakland University, Rochester, MI, on April 30, 2004, has been cancelled because of insufficient enrollment. Possible re-scheduling is under consideration.

3. PROBLEM DAY AND PLANNING MEETING. Attendance at the March 4 First Annual Affiliates Problem Day and March 5 Planning Meeting exceeded 25. Summaries, and at least some presentations from the Problem Day, will be available soon on the Affiliates home page:

4. SAMSI HOT TOPICS WORKSHOP. The April 1-2 SAMSI Hot Topics Workshop "Mathematical Sciences Research to Meet National Security Needs" drew more than 30 attendees. Reflecting strong interest by participants, there is now significant momentum for a SAMSI program on National Defense and Homeland Security in 2005-06. Watch the SAMSI web site for details of this and other 2005-06 programs.

5. APDF. The announcement for the 2004 NISS Affiliates and NISS/SAMSI University Affiliates Proposal Development Fund (APDF) is now available at

Proposals for awards effective during the academic year 2005–06, are due on June 1, 2004. Awards will be announced at the NISS/SAMSI JSM Reception in August, 2004.

6. SAMSI PROGRAMS FOR 2004-05. SAMSI will conduct three programs next year:

• Computational Biology of Infectious Diseases (Fall 2004 - Spring 2005)
  
  
• Latent (Hidden) Variable Models in the Social Sciences (Fall 2004 - Spring 2005)
  
  
• Data Assimilation for Geophysical Systems (Spring 2005)

7. CO-SPONSORED EVENTS. Affiliates reimbursement accounts (ARAs) may be used to attend events co-sponsored by NISS, including:

• 2004 QPRC: 2004 Quality & Productivity Research Conference (May 19-21, Raleigh, NC), also sponsored by SAS, the Quality and Productivity Section of the ASA and other organizations
