NISS Affiliates Program
NISS/SAMSI University Affiliates Program
Update: October 2004
1. AJL. This is a reminder that the Affiliates Job Listings are operating again this year. For those who are new to the Program and to remind everyone, the AJL is simply a centralized listing of job opportunities at the NISS Affiliates and NISS/SAMSI University Affiliates, and is located on the NISS Web site at
http://www.niss.org/affiliates/ajls.html
The AJL is open to all affiliates. Last year, there was a good mix of academic, government and industrial positions, and I hope for the same this year. Material for the AJL should be sent to Katherine Kantner (kak@niss.org). ASCII text is the preferred format (be sure that hyperlinks are clear), but we can handle almost anything.
2. BOARD OF TRUSTEES AFFILIATES COMMITTEE. As part of implementation of the NISS strategic vision, the Board of Trustees has established several ad hoc committees: Affiliates, Awards, Building, National Presence, NISS History and Science. Members of the Affiliates Committee are Alicia Carriquiry (Iowa State), Jon Kettenring (Drew University), James Landwehr (Avaya), Clifford Spiegelman (Texas A&M), Jack Stenner (Metametrics), Jessica Utts (UC Davis), and Lee Wilkinson (SPSS), who chairs the committee.
Jim Landwehr and Cliff Spiegelman are not Board members, but will help to provide input from the affiliates to the committee. However, as the committee proceeds, it will welcome input from all affiliates. The first meeting will be during the November 5-6 NISS Annual Meeting.
3. UPCOMING 2004 AFFILIATES EVENT
Workshop on Statistical Risk and Counterterrorism (co-sponsored): November 20, 2004, New York University. See
http://www.niss.org/affiliates/wsc112004/wsc112004.html for details.
4. PLANNED 2005 AFFILIATES EVENTS. The following list is only partially complete:
Affiliates reimbursement accounts may used to attend all of these events.
4. POSTDOCTORAL APPOINTMENTS. NISS has project needs and
funds to make several postdoctoral appointments between now and next summer.
Areas include digital government (data confidentiality, data integration
and data quality), dynamics of social networks, education statistics, software
engineering, statistical disclosure limitation for geospatial image data,
and bioinformatics. Involvement with SAMSI programs is possible. Please
make students and young colleagues aware of these wonderful opportunities.
Information and a downloadable announcement are available on the NISS web
site, at
http://www.niss.org/postdoc_info.html
In particular, there is a unique opportunity for a postdoctoral fellow to join the NSF-funded NISS project "Dynamics for Social Networks Processes: Comparing Statistical Models with Intelligent Agents."
5. SAMSI PROGRAMS FOR 2005-06. SAMSI will conduct 2005-06
