NISS/SAMSI University Affiliates Program

Update: July 2005

1. ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR. Nell Sedransk has been appointed Associate Director of NISS, effective July 26, 2005. She will play a major role in helping the affiliates programs continue to develop and ensuring that they meet affiliate needs.

Many of you know Nell already. She has served most recently as Chief of the Statistical Engineering Division at NIST. Prior to that she was Professor of Statistics at Case Western Reserve University, Program Director in the Division of Mathematical Sciences at the NSF and Professor of Biometry and Statistics at SUNY Albany. Nell is a Fellow of the ASA and an elected member of the ISI.

4. NISS AND SAMSI JSM SESSIONS

NISS-organized invited session "Secure Statistical Analysis of Distributed Databases," on Monday, August 8th from 2:00 to 3:50 PM, in Room 102D of the Minneapolis Convention Center. Presentations are by Max Buot: "Statistical Analysis in the Presence of Matching Uncertainty," Xiaodong Lin: "Privacy Preserving Statistical Analysis for Horizontally Partitioned Data Sets," and Ashish Sanil: "Privacy-Preserving Statistical Analyses of Distributed Data Using Data Perturbations."
SAMSI-organized invited session "Latent Variables in Science and Statistics," on Tuesday, 9 from 8:30 to 10:20 AM, in Room 103C of the Minneapolis Convention Center. Presentations are by Kenneth Bollen, SAMSI and UNC: "Latent Variables in the Social Sciences: A Multidisciplinary Program of SAMSI," Thomas B. Kepler, Duke University: "Multiple Scales and Hidden Variables in Immunological Modeling," and Shree P. Khare, SAMSI: "A General Framework for Adaptive Observations in Geophysical Prediction."
