4. REMOTE PARTICIPATION IN SAMSI WORKING GROUPS. Beginning this fall, SAMSI will put in place technology and processes that enable those outside the Research Triangle to participate in working groups for the programs in Financial Mathematics, Statistics and Econometrics, National Defense and Homeland Security and (in the spring of 2006) Astrostatistics. Ongoing SAMSI research is organized into working groups constituting collaborations of program participants with common research interests. Each working group is composed, in varying numbers, of long-term visitors, faculty and other senior researchers from the Triangle, SAMSI postdocs and graduate students, and meets weekly. (Of course there are ongoing informal interactions between meetings.) To ensure that participation by non-Triangle participants is meaningful, some physical presence at SAMSI, for example, attending the kickoff workshop or visiting SAMSI during the fall semester, is needed. Watch the SAMSI web site for details.

5. NISS BUILDING RECEIVES NC AIA DESIGN AWARD. The North Carolina chapter of the American Institute of Architects has honored O'Brien Atkins, the architects of the NISS building, with a 2005 Design Award. As owners, we received a very nice certificate, which now hangs in the lobby of the building. For (minimal) details, see http://www.aianc.org/awards/2005/index2005.html
