1. FALL AFFILIATES EVENTS

3. SAMSI INTENSIVE SUMMER PROGRAMS FOR 2007. There will be two of these:

4. POSTDOCTORAL APPOINTMENTS. NISS is planning to appoint at least three postdocs in 2007. There are opportunities in connection with ongoing and prospective research on data confidentiality, data quality, bioinformatics, education statistics and software engineering, the revitalized joint postdoctoral program with the CIIT Centers for Health Research and a new joint postdoctoral program with the Howard W. Odum Institute for Research in Social Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. For details, see http://www.niss.org/postdoc_info.html.

5. SAMSI DEPUTY DIRECTOR. In anticipation of a successful outcome of the renewal process, SAMSI has begun recruiting for a deputy director. This is a two year (extendable) position designed to help bring additional national perspective to SAMSI. The position is ideal for individuals interested in an intensive experience in research planning and management, as well as research itself, at a vibrant cross-disciplinary research institute. 6. DATA CONFIDENTIALITY WORKING GROUP. The group meets weekly at 9:15 AM Eastern time on Tuesdays, via a combination of teleconference and the WebEx web collaboration tool. Anyone interested in joining or just being added to the mailing list, please let me know.

7. NEWS ITEMS

I am pleased to congratulate four individuals from affiliates who have been elected to the NISS Board of Trustees for terms running July 1, 2007 - June 30, 2010. James Landwehr (Avaya Labs Research) and Linda Young (University of Florida) are newly elected to the Board, while Vijay Nair (University of Michigan, and chair of the Board) and Lee Wilkinson (SPSS, and vice-chair of the Board have been re-elected for second terms.
