NISS/SAMSI University Affiliates Program

Update: November 2006

1. AFFILIATES THRUSTS FOR 2007. You will hear more about these individually, but among those we plan are:

Visits by Nell Sedransk, Stan Young or me to as many affiliates as possible.
Formation of additional working groups, including one on data quality.
Initiation of the Exploration Workshops, starting with appointment of a program committee.
Instituting community mentors for postdoctorals--second mentors who will provide more support for our truly outstanding postdocs. Affiliates will be the first to be offered this opportunity. Potentially, this is a step toward a larger program of shared NISS-Affiliates postdocs.
Creation of an annual series of International Total Survey Error Workshops (ITSEW), following up on the March 2005 workshop on total survey error.

2. INFORMATION SEMINAR ON STATISTICAL DISCLOSURE LIMITATION. As part of ongoing NISS activities in support of the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), a day-long seminar on SDL was held at NCES on December 7, 2006. 3 . SAMSI PROGRAMS FOR 2007-08. SAMSI plans three major programs for

Risk Analysis, Extreme Events and Decision Theory (Fall 2007, Spring 2008). For details, see http://www.samsi.info/programs/2007riskanalysisprogram.shtml.

4. SAMSI INTENSIVE SUMMER PROGRAMS FOR 2007. There will be two of these:

5. POSTDOCTORAL APPOINTMENTS. NISS is planning to appoint at least three postdocs in 2007. There are opportunities in connection with ongoing and prospective research on data confidentiality, data quality, bioinformatics, education statistics and software engineering, the revitalized joint postdoctoral program with the CIIT Centers for Health Research and a new joint postdoctoral program with the Howard W. Odum Institute for Research in Social Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. For details, see http://www.niss.org/postdoc_info.html.
