Project Update - April, 2002

1. DATA CONFIDENTIALITY TECHNOLOGY DAY. A NISS Affiliates Technology Day featuring NISS research on data confidentiality will be held at the Bureau of Labor Statistics on Wednesday, May 29. 2. DATA SWAPPING SOFTWARE. Construction at NISS is nearly complete for a software system for analysis and implementation of data swapping. Its functionality includes:

User specification of the swapping rate (relative to the database orrelative to a pre-defined set of "at risk" records), attribute(s) tobe swapped and possible constraints on other attributes (for example, records may be swapped only if they agree on attribute A, or only if they differ on attribute B);
Carrying out the swapping, ensuring that no "false swaps" (records that are identical) occur;
Calculation of the distortion between the pre- and post-swapping databases;
[Under development, intruder-based models of disclosure risk in the pre- and post-swapping databases]
Extensive log capabilities.

A part of the software will soon be available as an experimental Web Service.
