3. STRING-MATCHING SOFTWARE. SecondString, an open-source Java-based package of approximate string-matching techniques, is available at http://secondstring.sourceforge.net/

SecondString was developed by researchers from the Center for Automated Learning and Discovery, the Department of Statistics, and the Center for Computer and Communications Security at Carnegie Mellon University. Quoting from the project page, "SecondString is intended primarily for researchers in information integration and other scientists. It does or will include a range of string-matching methods from a variety of communities, including statistics, artificial intelligence, information retrieval, and databases. It also includes tools for systematically evaluating performance on test data. It is not designed for use on very large data sets."


4. POSTDOCTORAL APPOINTMENT. One joint NISS/SAMSI appointment has been made already, of Xiaodong Lin, who will complete his Ph.D. in statistics at Purdue this spring. Xiaodong is joining the faculty of the University of Cincinnati in 2003, but will take a one-year leave to work on both the NISS Digital Government project and the SAMSI program on Data Mining and Machine Learning.

Other appointments are in process.


5. SAMSI PROGRAMS FOR 2003-04. SAMSI will conduct three programs in 2003-04.
