Topics range from statistical applications to methodology and theory to the expanding boundaries of statistics, such as analytics and data science.

JSM also offers a unique opportunity for statisticians in academia, industry, and government to exchange ideas and explore opportunities for collaboration. Beginning statisticians (including current students) are able to learn from and interact with senior members of the profession.

With a focus on the 2017 theme, Statistics: It’s Essential, the JSM program consists not only of invited, topic-contributed, and contributed technical sessions, but also poster presentations, roundtable discussions, professional development courses and workshops, award ceremonies, and countless other meetings and activities. Spanning the better part of a week, JSM runs from Saturday, July 29, to Thursday, August 3, with the technical sessions beginning Sunday afternoon.

  • 11:00 a.m. NISS Updates and presentation of NISS Distinguished Service Award.
  • 12:00 p.m. Lunch
  • 12:40 p.m. Tour of Modern Software by Lee Wilkinson, Ph.D.
  • 1:20 p.m. Big Data in the Federal Government by Jerry Reiter, Ph.D.

The NISS Distinguished Service Award will be presented at the workshop. The Award was established by the Board of Trustees in 2005 to recognize individuals who have given extraordinary service that significantly advances NISS and its mission.

How to participate

Affiliate Liaisons and Junior Liaisons are invited to register (no fee, but advance reservations required for the lunch).  Liaisons wishing to bring prospective new Affiliate representatives as guests to the luncheon are encouraged to contact Randy at officeadmin@niss.org

  • The reception will focus on the NISS theme, NISS Spreads Its Wings, highlighting both the geographic broadening and the expansion of the scope of NISS activities.
  • The Jerome Sacks Award for Cross-Disciplinary Research will be presented at the NISS Reception.  This Award was established in 2000 to honor Jerry Sacks, the first Director of NISS, and distinguished statisticians who made significant contributions to the Statistics bridge theory, methodology and collaborative science and engineering.
  • The Postdoctoral Achievement Awards will be presented at the NISS reception. NISS Postdoctoral Achievement Awards were established in 2015 to recognize former NISS postdocs who have had distinguished careers.
