Journal of Privacy and Confidentiality Publishes Papers Presented at NISS Workshop: Data Confidentiality - the Next Five Years

The electronic Journal of Privacy and Confidentiality (JPC) has just released its second issue. This issue was assembled by three guest editors:  Satkartar K. Kinney, Postdoctoral Fellow at the National Institute of Statistical Sciences (NISS), Joe Fred Gonzalez, Jr., mathematical statistician at the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS)/Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Alan F. Karr, Director of NISS.

Hailin Sang Appointed Postdoctoral Fellow at the National Institute of Statistical Sciences

Hailin Sang has been appointed as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the National Institute of Statistical Sciences (NISS). NISS is a research institute created by the statistical professional societies with support from a consortium of North Carolina universities.

David Yang Joins NISS as Research Associate to Work on Projects for NCES

The National Institute of Statistical Sciences (NISS) is happy to announce that David Yang has joined its staff as the Research Associate to work with the Education Statistics Services Institute (ESSI). ESSI provides technical expertise to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) in the areas of statistical methodology research, statistical analysis, survey development and project management. NISS is a partner with the American Institutes for Research (AIR) and RTI International in operating ESSI.

NISS to Work on Syndromic Surveillance Project for NSF and DTRA

The National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) have awarded $664,019 to the National Institute of Statistical Sciences (NISS) for collaborative research to develop Bayesian methods for syndromic surveillance. The research focuses on use of conditionally auto regressive (CAR) models to provide quantified estimates of the probability that a disease is present in a particular location, on characterization of associated uncertainties, and on computational implementation at a nationwide scale.

NISS 2009 Distinguished Service Awards Presented to Vijay Nair and John Rolph

August 4, 2009, Washington DC: James Landwehr, chair of the Board of Trustees for the National Institute of Statistical Sciences (NISS) announces that Vijay Nair and John Rolph are the recipients of this year's NISS Distinguished Service Awards. The awards were presented by Alan Karr, director of NISS, at the NISS/SAMSI reception held August 3 at the Joint Statistical Meetings (JSM) in Washington, DC.

2009 Jerome Sacks Award for Cross-Disciplinary Research Presented to Ramanathan Gnanadesikan

August 4, 2009 Washington, DC: James Landwehr, chair of the Board of Trustees for the National Institute of Statistical Sciences (NISS) announces that Ramanathan Gnanadesikan, retired statistician, is recipient of the 2009 Jerome Sacks Award for Cross-Disciplinary Research. The award was presented to Gnanadesikan at a NISS reception held August 3 at the Joint Statistical Meetings (JSM) in Washington, DC.

NISS Launches New Website

The National Institute of Statistical Sciences (NISS), an independent research institute through which the statistics community serves the nation, is pleased to announce a major redesign and improvement of its website, www.niss.org.

NISS and NASS Collaboration Kicks Off June 1

May 4, 2009, Research Triangle Park, NC -Three teams of researchers from the National Institute of
Statistical Sciences (NISS) and the National Agricultural Statistics Services (NASS), together with academic faculty and graduate students from five universities will convene at NISS in Research Triangle Park on June
1-2 to kick off the two-year NISS-NASS research program. The Opening Workshop is open to statistical
professionals, students and other interested researchers. The theme of the workshop is Open Research

National Institute of Statistical Sciences Hires Six New Postdoctoral Fellows

April 30, 2009, Research Triangle Park, NC - The National Institute of Statistical Sciences (NISS), a research
institute created by the national statistical sciences community, has appointed six new postdoctoral fellows. The
fellows will participate in several new research programs at NISS.

"Our research has expanded into several additional areas this year. We are happy to be able to hire some
of the best and brightest people coming out of the university system," commented Alan Karr, director of NISS.

Jian (Frank) Zou Takes Postdoctoral Fellow Position for the National Institute of Statistical Sciences

April 28, Research Triangle Park, NC - Jian (Frank) Zou from the University of Connecticut will begin work
as a postdoctoral fellow at the National Institute of Statistical Sciences (NISS) beginning in July. NISS is a
non-profit institution created by the statistical professional societies with support from a combination of North
Carolina universities to identify, catalyze and foster high-impact, cross- disciplinary and cross-sector research
involving the statistical sciences.
