NISS Receives Five-Year Grant from NSF for Triangle Census Research Network

The National Institute of Statistical Sciences (NISS) and Duke University received a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the U.S. Census Bureau  for the Triangle Census Research Network (TCRN).  The award, one of eight nationwide under the NSF-Census Research Nodes program, is for nearly $3 million and covers a five-year period.  Jerome Reiter,  Mrs. Alexander Hehmeyer, Associate Professor of Statistical Science at Duke, is principal investigator (PI) on the project; Alan Karr, director of NISS, is the co-PI.

In article in Significance Magazine, Young and Karr Propose Ways to Improve How Observational Studies are Conducted

S. Stanley Young, assistant director for bioinformatics at the National Institute of Statistical Sciences (NISS), and Alan Karr, director at NISS, have published a non-technical article in the September issue of Significance magazine pointing out that medical and other observational studies often produce results that are later shown to be incorrect, and—invoking a quality control perspective—suggest ways to fix the system .

NISS Is Part of a Team that Constructs the Census Bureau’s Synthetic Longitudinal Business Database

The United States Census Bureau announced in March that it is releasing its Synthetic Longitudinal Business Database Beta Data Product (SynLBD) for use by the general public. The was produced by the Census Bureau in collaboration with a team of collaborators that includes the National Institute of Statistical Sciences (NISS), Duke University, Cornell University, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the National Science Foundation (NSF).

NISS Elects Board of Trustees Members and New Officers

The National Institute of Statistical Sciences (NISS), a nonprofit organization that promotes cross-disciplinary and cross-sector statistical research, announced it has elected its new officers of its Board of Trustees and re-elected several members to the Board. The elections took place during its annual meeting held on November 5-6 in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina.

Sallie Ann Keller Receives the 2010 Jerome Sacks Award for Cross-Disciplinary Research

James Landwehr, chair of the Board of Trustees of  the National Institute of Statistical Sciences (NISS), announces that Dr. Sallie Ann Keller has received the 2010 Jerome Sacks Award for Cross-Disciplinary Research. Katherine Ensor, chair of the Department of Statistics at Rice University, accepted the award on Keller's behalf at the NISS reception at the Joint Statistical Meeting in Vancouver, British Columbia on August 2.

2010 NISS Distinguished Service Award Presented to Bock, Wilkinson and Thomas

James Landwehr, chair of the Board of Trustees for the National Institute of Statistical Sciences (NISS) announces that Mary Ellen Bock, Lee Wilkinson and James Thomas are the recipients of this year's NISS Distinguished Service Awards. The awards were presented by Alan Karr, director of NISS, at the NISS/SAMSI reception held on August 2 at the Joint Statistical Meetings in Vancouver, British Columbia.

NISS Hires Lawrence H. Cox as Assistant Director for Official Statistics

Lawrence H. Cox, Ph.D. has been appointed Assistant Director for Official Statistics at the National Institute of Statistical Sciences (NISS).  The announcement was made by Alan Karr, Director of NISS, who noted that “Larry Cox is a distinguished statistician who will help NISS in many ways, especially on research conducted in partnership with the federal statistical agencies. Larry’s joining us is an important step in the evolution of NISS.

National Institute of Statistical Sciences Awarded Grant for Postdoctoral Research in Support of Science Resource Statistics (SRS)

The National Institute of Statistical Sciences (NISS), an independent institute that conducts cross-disciplinary and cross-sector statistical sciences research, has been awarded a $750,209 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to establish a postdoctoral research program in collaboration with NSF’s Division of Science Resource Statistics (SRS). The two-year program will begin this June.

NISS and SAMSI Win NCPRSA 2010 InSpire Award in Social Media Category

The National Institute of Statistical Sciences (NISS) has been awarded the North Carolina Public Relations Society of America (NCPRSA) InSpire Bronze Best of Category Award for the Social Media category. The award was presented on Wednesday, May 5 at the Brier Creek Country Club. Bill Leslie, anchor for WRAL News, was the emcee.

Journal of Privacy and Confidentiality Publishes Papers Presented at NISS Workshop: Data Confidentiality - the Next Five Years

The electronic Journal of Privacy and Confidentiality (JPC) has just released its second issue. This issue was assembled by three guest editors:  Satkartar K. Kinney, Postdoctoral Fellow at the National Institute of Statistical Sciences (NISS), Joe Fred Gonzalez, Jr., mathematical statistician at the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS)/Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Alan F. Karr, Director of NISS.
