Postdoctoral Fellowships - 2008

NISS will offer distinctive postdoctoral fellowships in 2008, and invites applications from statistical, computer and applied mathematical scientists, as well as disciplinary scientists whose interests align with NISS projects. Appointments will be for two or more years. The salary is currently $70,000 per year.

Postdoctoral fellows at NISS participate in high-impact, applied cross-disciplinary and cross-sector research projects. They collaborate with, and are mentored by, senior researchers from NISS, universities, industry, national laboratories and government agencies.

Current NISS projects are in the areas of data confidentiality and its interactions with data integration and data quality; software engineering, education statistics (NISS is a primary partner of the American Institutes for Research in operating the Education Statistics Services Institute—Statistics and the NAEP Education Statistics Services Institute), bioinformatics, chemoinformatics, data quality and survey costs. Several initiatives are under development, including developmental trajectories in STEM, evidentiary statistics and the experimental analysis of algorithms.

Shared postdoctoral appointments are possible with the Hamner Institutes for Health Sciences (www.thehamner.org), addressing a variety of issues in bioinformatics, as well as with the Statistical and Applied Mathematical Sciences Institute (SAMSI), which is co-located with and a strong partner of NISS. See www.samsi.info for information about programs planned for 2008-09. In conjunction with its federal agency affiliates (Bureau of Labor Statistics, Census Bureau, Energy Information Administration, National Agricultural Statistics Service, National Center for Education Statistics, National Center for Health Statistics and National Security Agency), NISS can appoint postdoctoral fellows for 2-3 year terms in challenging, exciting assignments at agency locations in Washington, DC or elsewhere.

Teaching experience can often be arranged for postdoctoral fellows who wish it.

Applicants must have received, or expect to complete, a doctorate in 2002 or later. Women and members of under-represented groups are particularly encouraged to apply. Criteria for selection include demonstrated research ability in statistics or a relevant scientific discipline, interest in project areas, strength in computation, and skill in verbal and written communication.

Applications should consist of (1) a letter of interest responding to the criteria and projects listed above and containing full contact information and citizenship/immigration status; (2) a CV that lists educational background, research experience and publications; and (3) a dissertation abstract. These items must be submitted by E-mail, as PDF files if possible, to postdoc-application@niss.org. Applicants should also arrange for three letters of reference to be sent to the same E-mail address.

The deadline for full consideration is January 31, 2008. Later applications will be considered as resources permit. Appointments may be made at any time.

NISS is an AA/EEO employer
