Research

Below are some examples of the current research occurring at the National Institute of Statistical Sciences.

Education Statistics

Working through the Education Statistics Services Institute-Statistics (ESSI-Stat) and NAEP Education Statistics Services Institute (NESSI), NISS has convened a series of task forces to bring nationwide expertise to bear on problems of importance to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES).

Education: Online Reading Comprehension Assessment Study

The Internet is rapidly becoming the main way people read and process information. The Internet requires additional reading, comprehension skills, beyond those needed for printed text. One dilemma is how do students discern what information is correct and what is incorrect?

Health: Clinical Proteomic Technology Assessment for National Cancer Institute

NISS is working with the National Cancer Institute on the Clinical Proteomic Technology Assessment for Cancer (CPTAC).

Health: Quantifying Normal Variation in EKG’s

One of the factors the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) looks for when evaluating a drug is the potential for that drug to induce a cardiac arrhythmia. When a drug is administered to a patient, some of them can interfere with the normal electrical signals of the heart. In a normal heartbeat, the heart polarizes and then depolarizes, which makes the heart muscle contract then return to normal. The EKG (also known as an ECG) monitors the polarization-depolarization signal. Drugs are screened to detect whether there is any adverse effect of the depolarization of the heart.

Health: Syndromic Surveillance Study

Collaborative Research Developing ATD Bayesian Methods in Syndromic Surveillance: CAR Models and Computational Implementation

This research project focuses on the probability that a particular disease is present somewhere in the US, or present in a particular city, together with the associated uncertainty. There is enormous social benefit from early discovery of disease. The stakes are immense. The latest swine flu epidemic is a great example of how quickly a disease can begin and spread around the world.

NISS-NASS Cross-Sector Research in Residence Program (2009-2010)

The National Institute of Statistical Sciences (NISS) established a Cross-Sector Research in Residence Program in partnership with the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), the survey and estimation arm of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. This new collaborative venture by NISS and the USDA is the first project of a NISS initiative to host academic-government research teams focused on specific federal agency objectives.

Project TALENT Follow Up Study

Take yourself back to 1960. Despite the Cold War, it was a time of optimism in the United States. Our economy was booming, the industrial age was at its peak and we expected to continue our growth and prosperity. Civil rights and the Viet Nam war were still in the future.

Transportation Study - Establishing Monitoring Programs for Travel Time Reliability

The Institute for Transportation Research and Education (ITRE), in conjunction with NISS, Kittelson & Associates, Inc. (KAI), Berkeley Transportation Systems (BTS), the University of Utah, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) will work on a research project, Establishing Monitoring Programs for Travel Time Reliability.
