NISS Presents 2008 Sacks Award to John Rice

John Rice
University of California at Berkeley
Professor and Chair of the Department of Statistics

The award was announced by Jim Landwehr, Chair of the NISS Board of Trustees, at the NISS/SAMSI JSM reception on 8/4/08 in Denver.

AWARD CITATION: For outstanding, diverse cross-disciplinary contributions to ion channel receptors, energy demand, transportation, astronomy and functional data analysis.

Alan Karr, John Rice and Jim Landwehr

After receiving the award Rice remarked, "I am very surprised and honored to receive this award. Jerry Sacks is a pioneer in cross-disciplinary research, and I think that it is wonderful that NISS has an award named for him. Interesting, my work in transportation, which deals with measuring traffic flow on freeways, began with my involvement in the NISS transportation project in the 1990s. Thanks to NISS for the award and to all of you for being here."

More information on John Rice may be found at http://www.stat.berkeley.edu/users/rice/

His book "Mathematical Statistics and Data Analysis" (2nd edition, 2006) is very highly regarded.
