The WMU Department of Statistics offers a Ph.D. in Statistics as well as Master's and Bachelor's degrees in either Statistics or Data Science. For students pursuing degrees in other disciplines, we offer certificates in Applied Statistics or Biostatistics. Our strength is a constant focus on balance between applications and theoretical foundations, so that students feel they are learning relevant skills. Our graduates have an excellent record of employment in industry, as well as in academia.
The Department of Statistics emerged in 2001 after a split of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Since 2001, we have awarded over 50 Ph.D. and 300 M.S. degrees. Historically strong in nonparametric methods and linear modeling, the department has added strength in statistical computing to respond to increasing demand for data science and big data skills.
