The Department of Biostatistics in the Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) is seeking two tenure-track or tenured faculty members, starting in Fall 2027. These 12-month full-time positions may be filled at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor, depending on qualifications and experience. The department seeks exceptional candidates who can contribute to its academic and research missions. Successful applicants will be expected to develop and maintain externally funded research programs and to engage in the teaching, mentoring, and service activities of the department.
One position is expected to be filled at the Full Professor rank and will include appointment as Director of the UNC Gillings Center for Artificial Intelligence and Public Health, with a secondary appointment in the Department of Computer Science. This position is part of a UNC cluster hire on Safeguarding Artificial Intelligence in Health: Foundations, Uncertainty, and High Stakes Decision Making that includes three jointly appointed positions within the Department of Biostatistics, the Department of Computer Science, and the Department of Statistics and Operations Research. This cluster hire is structured to strengthen collaboration across these departments. The ideal candidate will provide intellectual leadership in AI safety for biomedical and public health applications, building on existing strengths in statistical machine learning, causal inference, and high dimensional data analysis. This individual will play a central leadership role in research, mentoring, and interdisciplinary collaboration, and will contribute to the continued growth and national visibility of AI in public health at UNC.
Applicants should have broad research and teaching interests, the potential to direct PhD-level research, and the ability to engage in collaborative research with other faculty members at the University. The applicant should have excellent communication skills. Candidates with expertise in statistical methods in artificial intelligence are particularly encouraged to apply.
