Instructor Position
The faculty of the Department of Statistics at the University of South Carolina, Columbia campus, invites applications for a full time, professional-track position at the rank of Instructor to begin January 1, 2026. The position is a 9-month appointment with a teaching load of 8 courses for the academic year. This is an annual appointment that may be renewed contingent upon Dean’s approval, satisfactory performance, departmental needs, and the availability of funding. Strong preference will be given to applicants who have a Ph.D. in the statistical and data sciences, or who will have completed all requirements for the Ph.D. by the start date, and have demonstrated a commitment to excellence in teaching. Applicants with only a master's degree in the statistical and data sciences will also be considered, but must have an excellent record of teaching together with other relevant professional accomplishments.
A successful applicant is expected to teach service courses to undergraduate students and courses for undergraduate majors in statistics. Additional opportunities to collaborate on research, both within and outside the department, are available and will be encouraged, but are not required for retention. This position is ideal for the candidate who desires a career in academia with teaching as the primary focus. Aside from teaching responsibilities, the successful applicant is also expected to render some service to the department, college, or university. The Department currently consists of 14 tenured/tenure-track faculty and 9 full-time instructors. Current research areas of the faculty include survival analysis, Bayesian statistics, latent variable methods, semiparametric and nonparametric modeling, highly structured data, statistical learning, functional data, statistical genetics, spatiotemporal statistics, statistics in neuroscience, object and manifold data, statistics education, machine learning, artificial intelligence and data science. The department has about 35 full-time graduate students and offers PhD, MS, BS degrees, and participates in the Data Science and Data Analytics BS degree programs.
