Katherine Jenny Thompson is the former Senior Mathematical Statistician of the Economic Directorate of the U.S. Census Bureau. She has extensive experience in all areas of sample survey design and analysis, including sample selection, estimation, variance estimation, statistical data editing, imputation, weighting and quality control. She has published papers on these topics in peer reviewed journals, including Data Science in Science, Journal of Official Statistics, Journal of Data Science, Journal of the Royal Statistical Society (Series A), Survey Methodology, Annals of Applied Statistics, International Statistical Review, Journal of Survey Sampling and Methodology, and Public Opinion Quarterly. Her research-based recommendations are implemented in a variety of ongoing surveys conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau. Ms. Thompson served as Editor in Chief of the Journal of Survey Statistics and Methodology for Survey Statistics from July 2012 through December 2024. Additionally, she served as Associate Editor of the Journal of the Royal Statistical Society (Series A) and remains an Associate Editor for the Journal of Official Statistics.
Ms. Thompson holds several positions in professional statistics societies. She is Senior Vice President of the American Statistical Association (ASA), which includes positions as Education Council Chair, and Budget Committee chair. She is a country representative for the International Association of Survey Statisticians in the International St Society of Canada, and the International Conferences on Establishment Statistics; she was a keynote speaker at for the 7th International Conference on Establishment Surveys (ICES-VII). She is an American Statistical Association (ASA) Fellow and an elected member of the International Statistics Institute. Her other recognitions include a team Gold Award and two team Silver Awards from the U.S. Commerce Department and individual and team Bronze awards from the U.S. Census Bureau.
