Overview
Ready or not, Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI) is here. The second AI Day for Federal Statistics workshop will be held April 30th, 2026, from 1-5 pm ET.
The Committee on National Statistics (CNSTAT), the Federal Committee on Statistical Methodology (FCSM), and the National Institute of Statistical Sciences are collaborating to organize a second workshop and training that will explore the implications of AI for federal statistics. The workshop will provide opportunities for training and capacity building, as well as share best practices for using AI to drive government efficiency, modernize the federal workforce, and address challenges facing the federal statistical system in serving the country’s data needs.

Federal agencies have begun to develop policies and strategies, provide access to Gen AI services to their staff, administer training, govern usage, and incorporate Gen AI into production workflows. Agencies are at different points in this journey, but everyone from front line staff to senior executives are discussing how to leverage AI (beyond machine learning) across the organization to advance their mission. The conversation is no longer about whether to use AI but how to use it safely and effectively.
The workshop will provide opportunities for training and capacity building, as well as share best practices for using AI to drive government efficiency, modernize the federal workforce, and address challenges facing the federal statistical system in serving the country’s data needs. Breakout sessions will focus on applications concerning federal statistics and cover the full range of use cases from productivity and document summarization to code development and conversion to statistical production work.
The sessions will focus on applications concerning federal statistics and cover the full range of use cases from productivity and document summarization to code development and conversion to statistical production work. There will be a poster session of work at federal agencies that includes all applications of any form of AI, such as machine learning, statistical modeling and analysis, operations, and coding and classification.
Call for Posters
See details and apply by March 26th: 2026-Call for Posters: AI Day for Federal Statistics
A poster session will feature work by and for the federal statistical system. Are you using artificial intelligence (AI) at a federal statistical agency, unit, or office, or to support federal statistics? We want to include your work!
Posters can include all applications of any form of AI, such as machine learning, generative AI, and AI agents, and may cover methodological issues, organizational constraints and challenges, efficiency gains, and other outcomes associated with the use of AI in federal statistics, such as in
- statistical modeling and analysis,
- coding and classification,
- survey development and operations,
- metadata creation and data ingest,
- assessing data quality,
- privacy protection,
- measuring uncertainty, and
- mission-enabling services such as budget.
Your application, with abstract, is due by March 26, 2026. Abstracts should be no more than 300 words. Applicants will be notified by April 2, 2026, if their poster has been selected. Please contact Maddi Nicol (mnicol@nas.edu) with questions or for additional information.
